'run, jane, run' supports women's service group

by Mary Susan

The sixth annual "run, jane, run" competition will be held the weekend of August 19. This all-women event is the primary fundraiser for the Women's Center of Greater Cleveland, which recently changed its name from the West Side Women's Center.

During the year 1993, there were 6,600 women and their families served by the Women's Center. Forty percent of these women were Latina/Hispanic and 20 percent were African-American. These women were served by a combination of direct

services and referrals through the Women's Center's extensive networking with other social service agencies in the Cleveland

area.

The Women's Center of Greater Cleveland is unique. The individual programs offered by the center may be offered by other agencies, but the Women's Center is the only organization that puts all the programs under one roof. Most Women's Center programs are offered in both English and Spanish. The chemical dependency aftercare-recovery program does not require prior treatment elsewhere.

The ultimate goal of the Women's Center is women's self-sufficiency and empowerment. As a result, the center does not follow the traditional treatment model of deciding for the client what the treatment will be. Instead, women participate in making decisions about their services. Unlike many other organizations, the counselor does not hold all the power. This participant input is characteristic of all the pro-

grams and support groups the Women's Center offers.

The best example of this is Peer Leadership Training. This program, which includes peer-led sessions on assertiveness, problem solving and listening, has been so successful that the Women's Center has developed a trainer's training. Facilitator's training takes graduates from Peer Leadership Training. The

first facilitator's training was funded by a grant from the Women's Community Foundation.

Because the Women's Center of Greater Cleveland is a non-profit organization, fundraising is often problematic. In 1989, the Women's Center decided to bring the "run, jane, run" amateur sports festival to Cleveland. Recently, they were able to buy the exclusive rights to the name of this

event.

Run, jane, run is the number one fundraising event for the Women's Center, and it is the largest amateur sports event for women in Northeast Ohio. The Women's

Center, along with the Plain Dealer and WJW Channel 8, is preparing to host the sixth annual run, jane, run event August 19.

The combination of women's health and fitness and fundraising is what makes run, jane, run such a unique event. Participants have an opportunity to compete in golf, volleyball, and a 5k run. These sports events

I will be held on the weekend of August 19, beginning with golf at the Links. On Saturday, August 20, volleyball will be held at Sportsworld and on Sunday, August 21, the 5k run will be held at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The Women's Center encourages anyone interested in supporting or participating in run, jane, run to call the Center at 651-1450. The center's hours of operation are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; callers can leave a message other times.

In addition to participating in the sports events, volunteering is a good way to get involved. Volunteers are creating a souvenir program book and selling advertisements. Or, consider making a contribution by taking out an advertisement. Become a friend of the center for only $25.00.

In summary, if you believe in the empowerment of women and enjoy competing for a good cause, consider becoming involved in this year's run, jane, run event. Come on out and join the fun; it's that time of year again. Run, jane, run!
